About Ano Mera
Ano Mera is a small village situated in the eastern part of Mykonos, about 8 Km away from the town. Those wishing to go to the beaches of Elia, Kalafati, Kalo Livadi and Lia pass by Ano Mera. It is the ideal place to escape from the busy town and it gives the opportunity to experience another side of the island helping visitors to get a better idea of Mykonos. The traditional cycladic element is present as it is in the whole island and it attracts many visitors every year.
What to see
The central square of the village accomodates many restaurants which offer delicious food and high quality local and organic meat. There are also a few coffee places where visitors can have some relaxing time and enjoy coffee along with handmade traditional sweets. A significant place at Ano Mera is the monastery of Panagia Tourliani. It is located at the main square and visitors can admire the marble fountain, which has sculptured decorations and the wood-carved "templo". The monastery is home of a very important Icon of Virgin Mary which was found at a beach on the west side of the island (Tourlos and hence the name Tourliani) and it is considered to be made by Luke the Evangelist.
How to get there
Visitors can get to Ano Mera village by taking any bus towards Kalafati, Kalo Livadi or Elia beach. All buses depart from the bus station located near OTE, at one of the main entrances to the town. Taxis are an alternative option.
